Michael Kay You're The Worst

Why does it take Michael Kay about twenty real-life seconds to determine whether or not a ball is foul? Does he not look at the umpires? Is he actually blind? This would clear up a lot. Adam Jones just hit a ball that was easily foul, even with a terrible angle on the 12" tv in my room...and Michael Kay did his same old routine:

"If it's fair it's gone (keep in mind this is said as the ball is landing) and it is .......................................................................................(ball lands)..................................................................(fan spills beer on girl while grabbing ball)...................(guy high fives everyone in the area including a senile 95 year-old woman with sunglasses that cover her eyes, cheeks, forehead and probably the guy next to her's view).....................................................................................................(ump throws pitcher new ball).............................................(pitcher lines up to throw to same batter)............................................................................................................................................................................................................a foul ball (said with extreme excitement if for Yanks opponent....with the tone of telling a father his son just died if for the Yanks).

Fordham University should be ashamed of this cornball, homer, clown.

Pigs in a Blanket

Last weekend I was sitting around in the Fairfax Wegman's Market Cafe when my roommate may have come up with the best new defensive strategy. Granted this isn't a great defense for a team that has good players. It is essentially a scheme that fits the Buffalo Bills, or a team with similar players. The Buffalo Bills have decent corners, mediocre linebackers, good DT's, and terrible Ends. This defense is employed when working with a 2-3 WR set on offense.

Since the Bills can't get any pressure on the QB, what is the point of playing with defensive ends at all. Pigs in a Blanket is a 3-8 formation. You line up your three best fat pig interior lineman. You place them squished over the football so you have 900lbs clogging the inside of the line. For this example you have John McCargo, Kyle Williams, and Marcus Stroud as your pigs.

You then line up Leodis McKelvin and Terrence McGee against WR1 and WR 2, leaving 6 available defenders. You then have six quick hybrid LB/Safetys line up in a straight line behind your pigs, about 5-8 yards behind. Donte Whitner, Poz, Aaron Maybin, Kawika Mitchell, Ellison, and Bart Scott. You now have 6 quick linebackers/safetys all standing up and it will be impossible for the offense to get a read of what the heck is going on. You have mass confusion of people dropping back, rushing, sitting still etc. Every play is a circus.

The premise is contingent on a few things. You need to assume that your pigs up front are good enough to stop anything up the middle and all rushing will be forced outside of the tackles. You need two good corners who can stand alone on an island. They will have help with people dropping back but need to be good enough to be able play some one on one. Your six gunners need to be fast and big enough to both effectively drop into coverage and penetrate on the blitz.

You get rid of your defensive ends who are just taking up space anyways, and teams might not be able to use their dominant offensive tackles as effectively. You are extremely susceptible to the big play with this defense, but for Bills fans, and fans of mediocre defenses, it is better watching this defense try to succeed then watch teams continuously have 12 play, 8 minute, 80 yard, touchdown drives.

Or maybe this is the worst idea ever and there is no helping a bad, weak, passive defense no matter how creative you are.

Random Musings

-Zack Greinke struck out 15 Indians to just 1 walk last night. Just a ridiculous performance...and while the Indians suck, their lineup had actually started to click a bit despite losing Victor. Pie finally got it going and Marte and LaPorta were slugging the ball around a touch.

-The Bo Sox get Wagner. It will be interesting to see what they do with him. Clearly, it would appear they are going to get rid of Papelbon and end up putting Bard in as their new closer. In the mean time, I'm not so sure how effective Wagner will be. His first outing vs the Braves, he appeared to have no command. He went 1-2-3 but that's only because Chipper swung at a 3-0 pitch that was a borderline strikes at best. That said, another power arm, left-handed at that, can't really hurt. By the way, looks like the Mets are shutting down Johan and Putz. What an absolute nightmare of a season for your unveiling of a stadium.

-Joba, predictably, looked terrible last night. Some serious cause for concern for Yanks fans.

-Good to see the Jets named Sanchez the starting QB. I was going to make a lengthy post about the situation yesterday. Essentially, he made a couple mistakes against the Ravens first team defense. One was inexcusable, but the one Lewis dropped happens to even the most veteran of QBs. Clemons then didn't even really outplay him vs the second-teamers. Besides that, the Jets are going to be very good in a couple years..but I think they are going to surprise a lot of people this year as well. They have very strong offensive and defensive lines. Leon Washington is a stud, and everyone is raving about Shonn Greene. They are some experience at QB and a couple more pieces away from being true contenders. But they are going to be better than Buffalo, and very likely Miami this year. Sorry Bills fans.

-I continue to crush Saratoga...but losing 20 bucks playing cards last night gives me an eerie feeling. Rachel Alexandra announced she won't be running in the million dollar Travers Stakes at Saratoga this Saturday. Instead she'll be running in the Woodward, a week later, which has been raised to a 750k purse. Will be interesting to see if any of the big name horses feel she is vulnerable and enter. Since the Preakness whatever she has entered has been largely avoided, though Munnings and Summer Bird took a shot at her at Monmouth...it was a no-contest.

-Staten Island.

-Happy Margarita Wednesday everyone.

Bills players are intimidating

This video is a little dated as it came out last Xmas, but it is still worth a view. The video is pretty self-explanatory as you can gather the bills are a bunch of dumb, unathletic, weirdos.....but I will mention a couple notes on my thoughts and individual performances:

Langston Walker: Glad our starting Left Tackle is a soft spoken waste of space. Who needs Jason Peters when you have this stud.

Robet Royal: A little rushed performance, but all in all compared to most not terrible. Unfortunately Robert is no longer on the team, and was cut in favor of Derek Fine, Schouman, and rookie Nelson. If you can't beat out that trio of awefulness, then there is only one place for you to go...thats right, your newest Cleveland Brown.

Kirk Chambers: Forgettable performance. Not really any enthusiasm. It seems his play on the field is quiete similar to this stint behind on the mic.

Copeland Bryant: If your 4th string Defensive End doesn't intimidate you singing about four calling birds then what does.

Justin Jenkins: Not only is this 7th wide receiver a standout on the special teams, but he is also one of the top performers on the twelve days of christmas. A spirited rendition of five golden rings, and the true value can not be seen until the final go around.

Blake Costanzo: Nice life, could they not get Brian Moorman to take this slot??

Lee Evans: If you only knew that no one would care about you one year from now once T.O showed up.
Pauly P: Looking like a dreamboat/Shrek

Leodis McKelvin: Not sure what language he is speaking. And clearly Leodis was not raised on the 12 days of Xmas (or raised by humans for that matter) as he clearly messes up the tune.

George Wilson: Is that a Bills 2nd string Safety or a model?

Marshawn Lynch: Yikes.

Trent Edwards: Apparently the stud of the team picked up the 12th day. Trent is looking stellar, though the performance is average, matching his production on the field.

Weekend Roundup

-A couple of ole-timers threw pretty well last night as Pedro Martinez beat his former employers, the Mets, and John Smoltz struck out 9 Padres in 5 innings of scoreless baseball..including a stretch where he k'd 7 straight hitters. Smoltz even looked good scoring on a base-hit, hook sliding into home plate. Looks like Smoltz can put that professional golf career on hold, for now at least.

-Giants got rocked by the Chicago Bears Saturday night. Cutler really looked improved. Shhh...quietly no one seems to realize how good the Bears are. That is criminal really. A team with a consistently great defense, that suffered some injuries last year is healthy again. They bring in Orlando Pace, who might only start 8 games but has to be considered an upgrade. Jay Cutler is about 10000 times better than Kyle Orton, and since he's a loud-mouthed jerk no one seems to want to realize this. They need Alex Brown, Mark Anderson, Adawale Ogunleye and Tommy Harris to stay healthy and be productive. I think they will...and given their division I'd say they should be considered the favorite to win the NFC this year.

-In a very boring series, by taking 2/3 the Yanks have now pretty much officially buried the Red Sox in the AL East and Boston now has the Rays breathing down its neck. Disappointing for the Yanks was Burnett again getting crushed..but CC came up with a nice performance last night.

-Would the Broncos just got ahead and trade the Giants Brandon Marshall already?

-Pewch Revolution dedicated reader Curtis, failed in his attempt to repeat as New York State Frolf Champion this weekend in Syracuse. A grueling four rounds in two days had him disappointed in fourth place. For those unaware frolf is frisbee golf.
A hybrid golf and frisbee, the person throws a "disc" (don't call it a frisbee) and attempts to get it in a basket in as few shots as possible. Curtis said he was very disappointed to have missed the podium but looks to rebound in the next big tournament, Labor Day Luau.

-Jamarcus Russell will start at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. As much as I've liked Jeff Garcia's game over the years, is it a good thing that the face of the franchise took this long to essentially beat out a 39-year old version of the Millman for the starting job?

-Headed up to the Spa yesterday after the weather forecast for Saturday looked brutal. Did nail the Alabama Stakes winner Saturday, Careless Jewel, at the OTB. Only 3:1 but she won by 11 lengths in perhaps the most impressive non-Rachel Alexandra run of the year. And there is an argument to be had that Careless Jewel could run with Rachel Alexandra in what would be a clash of the best 3-year old phillies in the world. Ended up having a successful day capping yesterday, great week of betting the ponies for me and today's card looks pretty appealing...

Usain Bolt, Running GOAT

19.19 200 Meter. That is so insane. That's better than a 9.6 100 Meter. Again, Bolt is the fastest man of all-time and it isn't even debatable. It's not close. His name will be legendary with the likes of Pele, Babe, Ali when all is said and done. He's more dominant than even Tiger or Roger Federer at his sport. Appreciate it for what it is.

Bills fans rejoice as Aaron Maybin signs. The quicker you can get a future bust into camp and see just how bad he actually is the better...the wait has been long, but I'm sure Bills fans across New Pennsylanada won't be disappointed.

Maybe we can get a twitter update from Esteban Ochocinco. How high does he climb up draft boards? Never before did we have a WR who will also score you kicking points. It would be hard to ignore him at the back of Round 1 at this point I feel.

Gary Sheffield, you are the biggest bitch in professional sports. What a whiny asshole.

Shhh...don't alert the authorities, BCA been robbing the OTB of late. Don't worry though, headed back to the Spa tomorrow to pull my best Robin Hood act, firing away and giving all my profits back. Alabama Stakes running, pretty big race. May post a little analysis in the morning if I get some time. Which God knows, I probably will.

There's being bald. And then there's Qadry Ismail. Can't believe ESPN is employing a man which such a ridiculous head/screen ratio. His block head can literally serve as a face and backdrop. Which would ordinarily make me ask the age old question. The Missile or The Rocket? But with such a huge Cuse bias, I'm sure to be disappointed with the reaction. That said, I side with The Rocket all day.

Let's get the facts straight.

If you remember on Monday, Mulldog had updated the status of the pewch shortstop form poll. I have copied and pasted the blurb below.

-Thanks to all who voted, confirming that the Millman is in fact a pewch shortstop, perhaps Pewch Nation is not very shocked at the NV Blues disappointing conclusion to the season. 81% saw the Millman's form as being pewch, and insider knowledge confirms that in fact 2/3 of the votes for "not pewch" were the Millman himself. I'm sure the other unidentified family member was voting completely unbiased though

I had confirmed 2 of the 3 votes to "not pewch" was by myself. Mullen tried to claim the 3rd vote was by a family member, and technically he is wrong. I had confirmed at a happy hour last night that the 3rd vote was by PC, my sister's boyfriend....technically not family at this point. Further more, PC attended the game in which that picture was taken, and has first hand knowledge of how not pewch I was (for that game at least). The rest of you are all just haters. I then showed the pictures to sloth pig Malaney who has been living on my couch for 4 months. He agreed that I was legit, slammed all former Fredonia middle infielders, and proceeded to give me the honor of telling me he would add my pictures to his baseball scrapbook on facebook. If that isn't a sign that I am not pewch than I don't know what is.

Plax Gets Two Years

Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty and got 2 years in prison. At 31-years old, I dare say the man's career is probably over. Just don't really see anyone taking a chance on a 33-year old con, who's essentially been out of the league for three years. Sad too, because Plaxico has been unfairly treated by the media. First off, how many NFL players, with all their fancy cars, clothes, jewelry and cash don't carry guns? Is it right? Not necessarily, but let's be realistic. Plax wasn't wielding the gun at some nightclub or threatening to shoot someone. Nor did he misfire and hit someone else. The guy shot himself. He didn't kill anyone. He didn't think of killing anyone. He was carrying a gun...a lot of people do it everyday and never get caught. Sure it was stupid, but you would have thought the guy was assisting Osama Bin Laden the way the media jumped down his throat with the "holier than thou, shame on you" nonsense.

I for one will always respect Plax. For all the flack he took for being lazy, he was the best blocking WR I have ever seen in all my years of watching the Giants play. Any WR that is running down the field throwing blocks is OK with me, especially when he's a 6'5 star.

TO not playing in the first two games of the pre-season. Lucky you, Buffalo!

Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib was arrested. He had a pretty nice rookie season coming out of Kansas last year, but has a bit of a history supposedly.

Serena and Venus bought a share of the Dolphins. A lot of winning blood in the ownership there, can that team really repeat last season's surprising run though?

Walter Jones is going to have knee surgery. How does it feel to have your season over before it begins Seattle? Rain, rain, rain.

Tom Brady will be tossing it around a bit for all of you Buffalo fans with a secret man-crush on him.

Not So Fast NFL

Cliff Lee just tossed another absolute gem for the peaking Phillies. A complete game, 11 K, 0 BB, 2 hitter. Sure the D'Backs offense is one of the worst in the league, but Lee suddenly has the Phils primed for another run at the World Series. When Rollins and / or Victorino are getting on at the top, that is probably the most dangerous lineup in baseball. Chase Utley still doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a top-10 player in baseball. The question is, can they find a way to re-charge Cole Hamels. I'm not at all surprised that he has struggled a bit this year after the taxing they had to put on him during the World Series run, but if he returns to form and Lidge remembers how to pitch, they may run away with this thing.

As we approach the stretch run, most of you are familiar with the divisional races and the wild card picture...but which teams are legitimate contenders?

Yankees - Obviously, the Yanks could win the entire thing. They are the class of the AL and while beating the Bo Sox will prove difficult..and the Angels are their kryptonite..they will likely beat up on the Central winner and then only have to go through one of those two, at home. I'm not impressed with the Angels..if they win home field advantage they will probably be considered the favorites, but the AL East is so much better than the AL West from top to bottom that I don't think people realize what is usually taken for granted - the Sox and Yanks are head and shoulders above the rest of the AL.
I therefore go out on a limb and say the boring - Yanks and Sox in the AL, no one else will come out.

The NL is trickier. There you have the Phillies which already were discussed. In the Central St. Louis added Matt Holliday and looks like they're ready to open up on the fading Cubs. The addition of John Smoltz as a fifth starter is a much better move than people are crediting it. Sure his ERA wasn't very good, but he had something like a 38/9 K/BB, proving that he can still miss bats while controlling the strike zone. He now moves to the NL and should be able to give 5-6 strong innings per outing before eventually moving to the pen where he could truly be an asset for the playoffs.

I still like the Cubs, if Soriano, Bradley and Soto ever start hitting they are going to make a run...the question is have they fallen behind too many teams to win the wild card?

Dodgers will win the West. Colorado is making a great run, but will have to win the wild card. I think Colorado is going to fade, but I'm not really sure who can take them out. I still say the 4 best teams are Phils, Cards, Dodgers, Cubs. And it's very hard to distinguish which of those teams are the best. Gun to the head I'm taking the surging Cardinals. Pujols has proven he can carry a team to the World Series before, now he's got a true sidekick and the lineup can be murderous to get through.

Should be an exciting stretch run for the baseball fans that are not too busy drooling over NFL training camps.

Smoltz To Cardinals

Just a quick update that Mr Smoltz will further destroy his legacy by putting on a Cardinals Jersey this year. YAY!

Show me the Money

Training camps are winding down. Teams have taken the field in pre-season games. It is a time where teams bond, position battles are won, and rookies and young players have a chance to learn the playbook and solidify themselves as potential contributors to the team. There are currently 3 rookies who still have not reported to camp. Andre Smith, Mike Crabtree, and Aaron Maybin.

Andre Smith:

Andre Smith was picked 6th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Reports are that he is seeking a 5 year $40 million dollar deal. Apparently the Bungles have offered a five year $33 million dollar deal. Smith was slated to be the starting Left Tackle for the Bungles. In what already was a risky pick given Smith's on and off the field activities for Alabama, he has done nothing to shake his image as a overweight, lazy, slob. I watched the first episode of HBO's Hard Knocks which gives an in-depth look at the Bengals Training camp. They had some footage of Andre Smith working out at home and the man just looks outs of shape and about 12 years old. All that being said he did dominate in college at a major SEC program so the man obviously has some skill, just don't know if the passion or drive is there. Being a LT will probably make it hard for him to come in and play and make an impact even if he does sign.

Micheal Crabtree:
Probably the most exciting and potentially game changing player to still not be signed has to be the 49er's Crabtree. The world class receiver from Texas Tech has been playing hard ball with the 49ers over his rookie deal. Though reports can't be confirmed, there has been some talk that Crab is willing to sit out the entire 09 season and re-enter the draft next year. There is no question that his foot injury probably hurt his stock a little and that is why he slipped to ten. There is still not excuse for the Raiders to select Derius Heyward-Bey at number 7. I don't care if the guy ends up being a hall of famer, it is a bad pick. You could have easily traded down and picked up DHB way later in the first (second) round if you wanted as I can't imagine him going in front of the likes of Crab, Maclin, Harvin, Nix, etc. That being said Al Davis I am sure told his head coach the Cable guy to grab someone really fast. They then looked at the combine results, sorted by speed as if it were a game of Madden, and said okay this guy.
Crabtree is bitter and wants to be paid top 5 money. Does he deserve it, yeah probably. He deserved to be a top five pick, but guess what he went 10. Since you went ten, that means you should be paid as the 10th overall pick. I understand where he is coming from, but his argument is really not that sound. The 49ers desperately need a player of Crab's talent and he could help whatever QB (hill, smith?) they ultimately decide to go with.

Aaron Maybin:

This pick stings my heart a little. I remember on draft day I wasn't really disappointed with the pick, just kind of blah. Aaron Maybin is a small speedy end (think Aaron Schoebel). It will be fun to one day (if Maybin ever plays) to watch him and Schoebel run wide out to the sidelines and then try to converge on QB, but both massive Tackles just swing around and never let them get close to a pressure. Using the Al Davis theory, it wouldn't surprise me of Ralph Wilson made this decision under the basis of trying to come up with a cool nickname for his defensive ends like "The Aaron Army" or "Aaron Squared."

Remember Maybin is kind of an unproved quantity where he only started one season for Penn State in the over matched slow Big Ten. Everyone has said that his deal relies on the Crabtree deal finally coming to fruition, and since they appear no where close, Maybin may be out for some time. He has already missed the entire Bills training camp. At least he put on some serious size this off-season (big ups to powertrain).

Mulldog's Monday Madness

A lot going on in the world of sports, let's jump right to it:

-Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable is beating up his assistants. At first it was reported that Cable fractured defensive assistant Randy Hanson's jaw by punching him and was ripping into the defensive coordinator. An unnamed source said "It was cable who hit him. He never saw it coming." Now there is a rumor that he instead flipped the Hanson off a chair and his jaw hit a cabinet. Good riddance already Oakland. Stop the madness. Seriously, can they stop the circus act for one season? I realize it is the NFL and teammates (hi Steve Smith) sometimes fight...but the head coach is dropping his assistants? And Cable refusing to comment on it only makes him look like a little kid...admit what happened, say everyone is over it and move on...now the story will linger, it appears to everyone that there is turmoil on the staff and Cable is not adorning the media at all. With Detroit having taken a lot of the pressure off Oakland as being the worst franchise in the NFL by going 0-16, looks like Oak-town wants its spot back. Appear to be in for another long season in Raider land, sorry R-Mania.

-Denver star WR Brandon Marshall is again demanding a new contract or a trade.

-St. Louis Cardinals are apparently hot on the trail of John Smoltz. While most teams would only let him come out of the bullpen, given his struggles to get through a lineup multiple times in Boston..I would guess St. Louis is willing to let him start. Their offense is clicking on all cylinders since Matt Holliday came over to hit behind Albert Pujols and got white hot. They certainly could still use another starter and while I'm not sure what Smoltz has left, I'm sure the NL Central would be more forgiving to him than the AL East and at this point, why not? You could probably convince him to take up a bullpen role in the playoffs where I think he could be top-notch. The upside is high and the downside is limited.

-The Giants and Panthers played the wildest pre-season game I've ever seen last night. With just over 2 minutes left, Carolina drove 88 yards to tie the game 17-17. The Giants then went three and out and punted. Carolina, with 10 seconds left and the ball on their 18 yard line set up for a hail mary before future perennial pro-bowl Defensive Tackle Leger Douzable sacked the Lina fourth-string quarterback and forced a fumble that DE Tommie Hill caught out of the air and ran 18 yards into the endzone as time expired for the win. I won't bore anyone with my analysis of how everyone performed, but first-round WR Hakeem Nicks doesn't look as polished as I had thought/hoped. 6'6 Third round I-AA WR Ramses Barden actually looked more polished. 2nd round DE Clint Stintim got a sack and 2nd round OT William Beatty certainly held his own against the 2nd stringers. When the Giants are the new Ravens this year, with an absolute lock-down defense and struggle to score, don't say I didn't warn you and your fantasy football team.

-The Detroit Tigers made a quiet, shrewd pick-up acquiring Aubrey Huff from Baltimore. Huff has seen his numbers really slip this year, but he still has a live bat and could contribute to a lineup that currently employs Carl Thomas as its third hitter. He should at least hold value as a bat off the bench and spot starting vs right-handers. With a narrow 2 game lead on the White Sox and the Twins looming 6.5 back..any little addition could make the difference for Detroit.

I'm sure the other unidentified family member was voting completely unbiased though.

-Lost in the mix with all the hype about the Strasburg signing is that the best hitter in the draft, second pick, Dustin Ackley, agreed to a deal with the Mariners worth just under 10 Mill at the last-minute as well. Third overall pick, Donovan Tate also signed with the Padres. And some high schooler for the Tigers got about 7 Mill. Ridiculous.

-Joe Mauer is quietly back up to .380...this after beating up Fransisco Liriano, who despite a good start vs KC two back, really looks like he's about to be shut down or put in the bullpen. Probably would be best..I wouldn't give up on him just yet, maybe next year he will re-gain form, but it is highly unlikely that he will ever be what he was a few years ago, and certainly will never live up to the potential everyone thought he had. Sad story.

-Quietly, Braves stud starting pitching prospect Tommy Hanson is starting to put things together at the major league level...

Millman's Monday Madness

Strasburg Signs:

77 Seconds was all that stood in between the Washington Nationals and Strasburg failing to sign an agreement before the midnight deadline. We have talked about the Nationals strategy and it was good to see a franchise step up and play some hardball even though losing a player of this potential caliber and hype would have been devastating. Strasburg signed the largest ever deal for a rookie by netting $15.1M over the course of a 4 year deal. A quick $7.5 of that coming in a signing bonus. The Nats played this whole situation pretty good I thought and they were stern in standing up to Boras. Granted they still offered up $5M more than anyone else had ever received so its not like they weren't shelling some money out. Boras and Strasburg would have looked like ungrateful jack's if they turned down a rookie deal of this magnitude. They absolutely could not risk not signing and re-entering next year. Too many strange things could happen. I wouldn't expect Strasburg to make much more in terms of noise until the start of next Spring. At least there is now some hope in D.C...something to come out to the ballpark for.

Paulus named Starter:

Greg Paulus opened up Syracuse Football training camp as the #3 QB on the depth chart. Several weeks into practice and he will be the face of the Syracuse Orange football team as the starting QB. The move was really a no-brainer in my opinion. Paulus could have been terrible and I still feel he is the man you have to start. Syracuse Football is the laughing stock of not only the Big East, but of the entire NCAA. They have fallen off the map and this one proud University is an afterthought in the football world. Greg Paulus will bring a hype to the Dome which once used to host sell-out crowds and be one of the loudest most intimidating places to play.

It will be interesting to see if Paulus can succeed and how much rust he will have to shake from taking 4-5 years off to be the hated PG of the Dookies. Not really sure my reaction's on the situation. The Orange are my favorite football squad and every year I sit down and watch the first game. They get crushed. Then I hardly follow them the rest of the year. I don't particularly like Paulus (but that is only because he was @ Duke). Once again, its the right move and it has a chance to put Syracuse Football back on the map from a media perspective at least. Pretty sad state of affairs in Upstate NY football where the Bills and Cuse are willing to sign anyone just to hopefully put some fans in the seats. Maybe Paulus will be lights out and show why he was such a hot recruit coming out of CBA high school. Any chance he parlays this into a NFL career?

Buffalo Bashing:

I was listening to the clown Junkies on the radio this morning and surprise surprise it was all Redskins talk. It is the same argument every day, does Jason Campbell stink? I will save you all the trouble...yes he does. Anyways, why I bring this up is because one guy was defending all the upgrades the Skins made and was saying that Derrick Dockery (former Bill) was a big upgrade. One guy fired back that the Bills straight up cut him and he was terrible. They proceeded to argue that the Bills were just cheap and terrible.

They then had their buddy call in who is apparently a Buffalo NY native. They asked him to name the top things about Buffalo where he could only respond...uhhh, we have good architecture, and Niagara Falls, and Lake Eerie, and wings. Terrible. They then spent the next five minutes saying how terrible Buffalo is and if you live there you are an idiot. Poor Buffalo just getting shredded all over the United States.

Ocho-Cinco Tweeting:

"Damn Breaking news: I have the swagg flu, doctors say there's no cure=many celebrations, sh%# talking, interviews in auto tune, pinata, etc."

"Anyone know Jay Z, tell him before the death of autotune let me get these interviews in first, but then we can have a proper burial in the nzone.

Weekend Roundup

-Y.E.Yang. How many people thought this would be the man to go toe-to-toe with Tiger and take him out on a Sunday in a major? How many people even knew the South Korean golfer? Even after Yang eagled late, it was hard to take him serious, but he played great golf down the stretch and his approach on 18 was just a perfect cap to the tournament for him. The look on Tiger's face was priceless, he looked beyond shocked and a little hurt, like when the older brother finally gets beat playing one-on-one with his younger brother.

-In the Saturday blurb I told the Pewch Nation to load up on my favorite horse, Better Talk Now in the Sword Dancer at Saratoga. Off at 11:1 he placed to pay 11.00. A 33:1 shot Telling came in for the win, netting the BCA a nice little hit of 322.50. Better Talk Now always comes through for me.

-Usain Bolt is the fastest human to ever walk the face of the Earth. 9.58 100 M. Are you kidding me? And the guy looks almost as if he's slowing down so as not to completely embarrass the rest of his opponents. I was watching a clip of him on Letterman, interesting fact, before he won the 100 at the olympics he was eating chicken nuggets. I'd post the video, but just search it on youtube if you want to watch it's there...otherwise it's a long video for watching a streak for less than 10 seconds. I don't think people really understand how great Bolt is or just how legendary the man will become. When all is said and done I think he'll be the most legendary track and field star of all-time. He toys with people in the 100 meter...that doesn't happen, that can't happen. You usually win these races by hundreths of a second, a slightly slow start, a bobbled step or the slightest let up leads to even the best sprinters getting beaten in this race. Not bolt, he swing his hands, smile at the opponent in the lane next to him or simply put on that look of effortless coasting and still be so far in front of everyone else. He's the GOAT. Respect it.

-Not sure how many people watched the snoozefest that was Sunday Night Baseball last night, after a long rain delay most of the Braves players looked asleep. JA Happ is terrible...somehow he threw another gem. When he comes crashing back down to Earth it may get ugly though. Vazquez actually looked pretty good, mixing a lot of off-speed pitches, unfortunately for him Howard hit a jam shot homer and then after Rollins and Victorino singles he left an inexcusably poor change-up upstairs and Howard did with it what he always will. A really bad weekend for the Braves as Howard killed them, homering off Braves closer Rafael Soriano Friday night for the win and putting the Braves in a wild-card state of mind. Chipper Jones also looked hurt after striking out in the 6th from the right side. Doesn't look good for Atlanta at this point.

-Three major league baseball players were beamed in the head this weekend (in fact I think all three Saturday night, there might have even been another Friday). Perhaps worst of all was Hiroki Kuroda getting beamed with a line drive that surprisingly didn't shatter his skull. That was one of the more alarming shots I've ever seen. Ian Kinsler got beamed by someone on the Bo Sox and was not very happy about it getting up and yelling but was alright. David Wright on the other hand took a 95 MPH fastball from Matt Cain to the head and has been placed on the DL. He may be out for the season and the Mets, at this point, would probably be wise to do just that with the face of the franchise. Cain was visibly upset after the pitch...but it's baseball and that happens, even Roger Clemens misses up and in sometimes. Right Mike Piazza?

-Surprising to no one it appears that the Nationals will not be able to sign San Diego St star pitcher and first pick Stephen Strasburg. Saw this coming a mile away, but I give the Nationals credit for drafting him and offering him a record deal. Not much more you can do...they probably knew this was possible but went through and did the right thing taking him first overall. Something needs to be done about rookie contracts in sports. These should be handled as any other entry-level jobs...there should be a close to set amount for how much a person makes based on position and draft slot. The demands of the agents and players are out of control, and while I can't say I blame them, there has to be some sort of break for the teams until the player proves himself. Just because you're the first pick in the NFL draft doesn't mean you should suddenly be paid in the top-5 at your position. And just because you dominated a couple of Mountain West hitters who probably wouldn't look all too out of place in the SUNYAC doesn't mean you can demand to be paid like CC Sabathia. Take the record deal, prove how fucking sweet you are by mowing down minor leaguers (you're on the Nationals, you might even start in the majors)...win a Cy Young, make the president proud and then cash in.

**Wanted to edit it that Bolt was eating McNuggets...not sure if that was clear (are there really any other kind of nuggets?)...by the way his explanation was pretty hilarious, he said he wasn't too familiar with the asian food and before a race you don't want to eat something you're not familiar with "but chicken nuggets, I know chicken nuggets."

Summer Classic

I woke up on Saturday Morning @ 6:30 am. Should have slept for another 2-3 hours, but my excitement for the Championship game that day kept me up like I was 8 years old on Christmas Day again.
The game was in Maryland and when we arrived the field we were disgusted. Apparently, the decided to find the most disgusting field in the Washington/VA/Maryland area and have them host the championship game. The infield was essentially cement, and their were no dugouts. Things were not looking good.

The Blues bats fell silent for most of game 1. They were down 2-0 entering the 7th an final innings of game 1. Top 7th, down 2, meat of the order coming up for the NV Blues. Back to Back doubles and the Blues are suddenly down by only 1. Was this a real game or just a made for TV movie? Our next player hit a towering 2 run shot over the left field fence and the Blues had just gone up 3-2! They headed to the bottom of the 7th needing to just hold the Dodgers and walk away with an unbelievable game one victory. Unfortunately for the Blues, and this fairytale season, the Dodgers had other plans.

A solo homerun in the bottom of the 7th tied things up. Things got real salty as the man trotted around the bases muttering, "That's how its f'ing done!" We were headed to extra innings and after a scoreless 8th, the Blues got the go ahead run in the top of the 9th. It was the same song and dance in the bottom of the ninth as the Dodgers evened up the game, and eventually we walked in the go ahead run. Devastating loss of game 1. Heart wrenching.

The Blues had to somehow figure out how to shake that game, in the 90 degree heat, and come out to play a 2nd game. The emotional roller coaster of game 1 proved to be too costly as the Blues got spanked game 2. I believe the highlight of the 2nd game had to take place in about the 3rd inning. Our catcher was hit by a foul ball in the hand and the Dodger bench was trying to claim he interfered with the batters swing. Our pitcher, who was already on edge, mouthed back to the Dodgers telling them to shut up. Things got pretty heated an our pitcher walked to the foul line point his mitt and screamed out "F You!" Coaches were called to home plate and warnings were issued. If the Blues were smart they should have just had a bench clearing brawl and ended the game and hour earlier so we could have all gone home.

All in all, a great season by the Blues. The DCMSBL could not have seen this run coming from such a ragtag bunch of players. The league, working in similar fashion as premier soccer leagues, will shift teams up and down divisions next year based on their standings. The Blues will no doubt catapult into the A league next year. As for now, I am personally drained from baseball and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of the summer in peace. And by peace I mean the air condition just broke in my house and its 90 degrees and I lost 5-10 lbs in pure sweat all ready. Thanks for kicking me when I am down.

Dave Show From Forever Ago Now

Apparently I worked this show. Pops got us backstage actually.

Here is the set, got to see it up close and personal.

Drum set, host of the highlight of the show, unreal drum solo by Carter.

Found this painting of LeRoi sitting on a box backstage.

This is all from Dave Matthews at Bethel Woods. My dad works there and was able to get us some tickets / backstage for a bit. Overall was a pretty legit show. Disappointed that it was pretty thin on the classics however, and there was an emphasis on the new stuff which I am both not that partial to and somewhat unfamiliar with. Sounded good however, Dave gave a pretty pimp entry walk and the drum solo was fire. Hard to be disappointed seeing Dave play at the same grounds that housed Woodstock (happy 40 years). Most interesting thing I can think of (it was a week and a half ago by now) is that my dad said Dave put on a helmet and some goggles and was ripping around the parking lot on a bicycle before the show with no one recognizing him..and he also claims he does that before every show.

Also my girlfriend was taping some girl doing her best Woodstock dance when some "Security Guard" woman said we couldn't tape it the band doesn't allow it. Interestingly, wikipedia claims Dave doesn't care about people taping his shows since he attributes much of his growth to college students swapping live footage.

I don't know who I believe but I know I trust anything Wikipedia says.

Lengthy weekend roundup in the morning and I'm sure we will have a Millman NV Blues Championship recap. Then again, I haven't heard from the Millman, think I might have even texted him and I'm beginning to believe inevitably that the Blues suffered defeat, and the Millman decided to end it. Have to love the dedication at least.

Saturday Action

After seeing ESPN put Vladamir Guerrerro literally hitting a pitch off a bounce into mid-left field for a single in 7th place on the Top 10 today, I just wanted to say, ESPN YOU"RE FUCKING STUPID.

While we all wait with bated breath for the conclusion of the NV Blues season, I'd just like to wish the Millman and the rest of his clan good luck, even if they have the Pewchest formed shortstop in the "league."

Probably making a run to either the Woodstock 40th year anniversary celebration at Bethel Woods today (as many of you know my dad works there and can get me in). Otherwise it's off to the OTB, with surprisingly four horses on my watch list running today...this is pretty strange since my watch list is about 10 horses long. One of my all-time favorites, Better Talk Now (horse is like 11 years old, still running) is running in a big stakes race at Saratoga at 5-1. Back up the trucks everyone.

Motivational words for the Blues

NV Blues were busy contacting each other via Email regarding the Championship games slated to take place tomorrow. Let's take a look at one of the stellar exchanges below: Written by 3rd basemen/3 hitter/my roommate Timke:

Hey boys, I think we're all excited for the big day tomorrow. We arguably have the toughest set of games that we've had all season ahead of us. I think it's only fitting to forward on to you some words of encouragement I received today as a few of my good friends stopped by:

Denzel Washington stopped by the house today and told me to pass this along: "In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power! Well, that baseball field out there tomorrow is YOUR universe. Rule it like the Titans, and you make sure they remember FOREVER, the day they played the NV Blues!

Sylvester Stallone dropped in to say, "Go the distance! Nobody's ever gone the distance with these Silver Spring Dodgers, and if you can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings after the 7th inning and you're still standin', you're gonna know for the first time in Blues history that you're League Champions!!

Kurt Russell came dressed as Coach Brooks from "The Miracle" and went on to say: "Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that's what you guys have Saturday, boys. That's what you've earned, boys. 1 more series, fellas. Tomorrow you will hit with em'. Tomorrow you will throw with em, and you shut them down because you CAN! Tomorrow you will be the greatest Blues team in the World. You were born to be baseball players; every one of you. You were meant to be there tomorrow. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over! I'm sick and tired of hearing of what a great baseball team the Silver Spring Dodgers have. Screw em! This is your time! Now go out there an take it!"

It was a long day today having 3 visitors, but I had to take the time to let ya know about it. Let's go out there and take what's ours boys. See ya at the ball field around 11.

Classic.

Tweet Tweet

I just picked up a new iphone the other day and it has suckered me into the Twitter world. I never thought I would cave, but oh well, here I am. Been following a couple athletes this past week...thought I would like to share some of the decent tweets of the past week.

Chad Ocho Cinco:
  • " I am triping, shhh Coles, Hendry, Caldwell, Simpson, Ocho Cincio=DMNDS!!!!"
  • "DMNDS= don't make no damn sense, when something is awesome you label it dmnds, Halle Berry=dmnds yall get it, now use it in a sentence"

  • "Me fighting @shawnemerriman DMNDS because I'd run circles around his tow left feet having a$$!!!"

  • "How can @shawnemerriman fight me if his lights are out? DMNDS"

Terrell Owens:

  • "Welcome back 2 the NFL mike!! God Bless!!
  • (Jesus said,) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you the rest." MATTHEW 11:28
  • "B back possibly on mon, i'll make sure things r back 2 normal@ I do apologize tht the fan enthusiasm has been down! LoL
T.O usually gives a inspirational tweet a day. He is so thoughtful.

Right now I am following Chad Ocho Cinco, Aaron Maybin, Lee Evans, Donte Whitner, Brian Moorman, Kawika Mitchell, T.O., and SHAQ. A weak cast of tweeters if you ask me. If any interest in someone particular to follow I am free to suggestions..

Philly, You Lucky Dogs

So the Eagles won the Vick sweepstake, signing him to a 2-year deal to do, well...I don't think anyone knows what they plan to do with him. My guess would be that they saw it as a sound financial decision from a value perspective since the first year is just 1.6 M and the second year is an option (I assume team option) of 5.2 M. The NFL isn't trade happy, but if someone loses their quarterback and Vick looks healthy you never know. I would have to guess we will see some Wildcat formations in Philly at least. Andy Reid should show some sense of humor and call it "The Rottweiler" or something.

If you didn't already see the Prince Fielder home run from last night, that went off the upper portion of the scoreboard, do yourself a favor and find it. It's probably on mlb.com , the only video on youtube I could find was video from someone's camera at the game and you couldn't even really see the ball. Just an incredible blast though, and I don't think he even tried to fight a single Padre last night.

Troy Tulowitzki is killing it. He seems to homer every night. I do hate Colorado for the reason that guys like Clint Barmes crush, but Tulo has really had a huge season.

CC had a 10 strikeout performance at Seattle last night and it looks like he might be ready to go down the stretch yet again this year.

Ron Mexico to Buffalo???

There are reports that Mike Vick is in Buffalo. NFL.com, adam schefter, profootballtalk, espn, etc all are reporting that Buffalo is a potential landing spot.
I am pretty shocked. Several weeks ago GM Russ Brandon came out and said the bills have no interest in Vick. He did throw out the very sneaky "at this time" caveat.

Would I be interested...absolutely. Give me a chance to get an absolute stud athlete and confirmed criminal on my beloved team and I would be ecstatic. From a football standpoint its got to be unnerving for Trent Edwards. Granted Vick probably isnt ready to play and is not in football shape, let alone he has a suspension to at least week 6 likely looming, but Trent Edwards has not secured anything in Buffalo. Sure, they are trying to make him the franchise QB, but the bottom line is he is in year 3 and hasn't won anything. Once they start losing some games and if they had Vick on the bench you would bet TO will be barking up a storm.
Donte Whitner also tweeted yesterday that he would love for Vick to be on the Bills and that everyone deserves a second chance. Not sure if that was a general statement or was made because he may have heard some inside knowledge.....

Stay tuned....Buffalo Bills...the home of the new Dawg Pound??

I am Useless

So after waking up at 7:30 AM I have just completed a 5-post analysis of my fantasy baseball league for all to see, with final projections and in-depth analysis of every scoring category. Clearly, more important than searching for a job. And clearly I have turned to The Pewch Revolution to stall that further.

Pedro Martinez is good. I read reports that he was pitching out of the wind up with runners on base though. Apparently Pedro has been watching too many of those ESPN Little League World Series commercials ESPN is bombarding us all with.

Seriously though, even as a hated Red Sock for all those years, I always secretly enjoyed Pedro. He is such an artist to watch...just so fluid in his motion and all of his pitches just have a zip about them.

He probably will need to throw more than 5 innings at some point to be of much use to the Phils...but if he can still juice it up to 93 at times there is little reason to believe he can't still be effective.

I don't care about Rick Pitino.

Soccer involves a lot of running.

Hi I'm a real man, I through my helmet!

For those who missed it the Tigers and Red Sox got into a bit of a scrap yesterday with both benches and bullpens emptying. Basically this all started Monday when Brad Penny hit Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers responded by plunking Kevin Youkilis. Cooler heads prevailed that day. Tuesday however, was a different story. Some pewch rookie for the Sox nailed Cabrera again. This time it was in the hand which would eventually cause Miggy to leave the game. This would be the point in the game where a responsible umpire would issue warnings to each manager but unfortunately that was not the case. Enter Tigers rookie phenom Rick Porcello. Although he maintains it was an accident, Porcello hit Youkilis again causing the "tough guy" to charge the mound and, wait for it, throw his helmet at Porcello. Porcello promptly pulled a card out of his UFC skill set and took Youkilis down. Youkilis was obviously thrown out but they also threw out Porcello without giving him a warning. If this was the National League they would have had to hit about 9 people before someone got thrown out. Boooooooooooo!

Tulowitzki Hits For the Cycle

Is anyone else outraged that the last triple should have been ruled a double and an error on the errant throw? Am I truly just a scrooge-esque heartless man?

Alex Rios headed to the Chi Sox after the Blue Jays just let him go. Not sure why anyone would pay that much for such an average outfielder, maybe the Chi-Sox didn't expect it to play out like this though. Congratulations Chicago, you just added two huge contracts, one of which pitched at the all-time pitchers park and the other is a pretty ordinary player.

It's Monday and People are already acting Pewch

(Hello, it's me again. Sorry I was gone but I started a new job and also had a really nice baggage employee for Air Tran Airlines touchdown spike my laptop bag and shatter the screen.)
It's a beautiful Monday in LA. You would think people would be in a good mood. You would be wrong. Let me run down just a small sampling of the pewch behavior that has taken place today.

Delta Airlines Customer Service- I checked a bag in Los Angels on June 25th. They lost it somewhere in Atlanta. Since then I have called 3-4 times a week trying to get my bag sent back to LA. Today when I called a nice young man whose name rhymes with Greg told me the bag was not lost so I can't file a lost baggage claim and collect the $600. Naturally I asked Greg how he knew that my bag was not lost and he told me that his computer showed that it was "in transit". I asked if by "In Transit" he meant "I'm a low level employee at Delta who needs this job so that I can pay for my $300 dollar a week weed and online poker habit so I'll just read whats on the computer." He said "In Transit" means at some point it will make it to LA. I doubt it. I have accepted that the bag is lost and now I just want my money or a bag of peanuts or maybe a window seat on my next Delta flight. Oh wait, that's right I wouldn't fly Delta again if they promised me lap dances from the pussycat dolls.

Jamie Pressley- Hi I realize your hot and that you are funny and you have won awards for your acting career but none of that is an excuse to piss your pants outside a gay bar in West Hollywood during the day. (and yes she was drunk) and no I wasn't at the gay bar...at the time.

Jeremy Piven/Chris Kattan- Through out the records when Ari Gold and Corky Romano square off. Seriously I never found midget wrestling funny until two famous people who are both really short decided it would be fun to fight. Their reason for fighting? Apparently the two were both booked to appear on a talk show. Kattan greeted Piven by asking him if he was there to promote his Broadway show.( If you didn't know Piven suspiciously quit a play on Broadway last fall because of mercury poisoning) Piven responded, in my opinion hilariously, "Are you here to promote Mango?" that's all fine and good but evidently you do no mock Mango in front of Chris Kattan because they proceeded to argue for 10 minutes before they had to be separated. Pewch.

Finally not acting pewch: Jessica Biel! It looks like she's on the market. Time to turn on the Charisma and Charm (Creepiness and awkward silences) and when her heart.

Stay Pewch!

Form is incredible

Mulldog is trying to clip me. The cat is pewch. Bottom line is....
Form might not be good, but if you take a look at this excellent frame by frame shot, the end result is clear. This Cat is hosed. Ball is already in the mitt and he is still a step from the bag. Another standout play by the millman. Don't judge me.

Going to the Ship

(Lock it up, the millman with another strike to first)

Last inning. Blues lead 4-1. 3 outs away from a trip to the Championship.

Error. 2-run home run. walk. 2-run home run. Blues trail 5-4 heading to the bottom half. What a sucker punch that inning was. Had the game wrapped up, 3 outs away from victory and Blues totally collapsed. The Blues were staring a one run deficit in the face, with hitters 6-10 due up. The season was over, there was no way this Blues team could muster up a victory...and then I remembered this was a team of destiny.

Lead off walk. Pitcher is relieved and a new guy throwing gas, but erratic steps in. Hits the next two batters. Extremely rattled and can't seem to find the zone. Bases Loaded, zero outs, down 5-4. Our 9 hitter nubbs a ball down the first base line. Just as the 1st basemen scoops up the ball he has this indecisive look on his face because he doesn't know if he should tag the runner then go home, or just go home. Clearly the man should have gone home as the pressure mounts on him and he boots the ball. Blues tie the game 5-5 with the bases loaded and zero outs still. 10th hitter steps to the plate. Nub city again. This time its a slow roller down the 3rd base line. So slow and right on the foul line that the 3rd baseman has no play for it. He waits for it to roll foul, and the ball stops dead on the line. Fair ball. Blues advance with the most unimpressive walk off victory in history!!

They are now set to face the top seed in the tournament the SilverSpring Dodgers, first place team in the A League. Best of three is set to take place Saturday, with a third game on Sunday if necessary. Let's see if these NV Blues have a little left in the tank to take home the Gold.

Revenge falls short

Sure it may have been ten years later. And well, it may have just been a pre-season game. Okay, the first pre-season game, and the hall of fame game. But it was finally time for the Buffalo Bills to strike revenge on the Tennessee Titans for the god awful forward pass Music City Miracle. The bills are fighting a brutal 10 year absence from the playoffs so maybe beating the Titans and exercising the evil devils would set them right for the season.
Or maybe on the opening drive a rookie punter would just take fake a punt and run 40 yards for the touchdown and put the Bills away for good. It took me a good solid 5 minutes to remember that it is preseason and that it doesn't matter. Bills came out looking great in their new solid white throwbacks. There is no question about it the Bills should be playing in those and their royal blue throwbacks all season. So much sharper than the arena league (RIP) junk they wear now. Titans looked good in their baby blue Oiler garb as well.

T.O had a great first series, catching 2 balls for 27 yards before calling it a day. Trent Edwards and the bills offense were pretty sharp to start, introducing the no huddle offense that they are going to be running all year. Or should I say they will be running it for the first series of the year, going 3 and out, and abandoning it forever. Especially when they are getting crushed by the Patriots opening night. Funny how one preseason game can change the whole outlook on a season. Speaking of the Patriots, did anyone see Tom Brady's Emmy winning performance on Entourage last night. What I had anticipated as a brief cameo, turned into an half hour long guest spot. Even Tom Brady's golf swing was perfect. What a guy. I sat there and wondered why do I hate this man. He really doesn't come across as a bad guy, doesn't say anything terrible to the media. He is flat out a winner. Scores touchdowns, Mvps, Superbowl's, and beautiful babies. whats not to like. If he can win Turtle over, he can win me over. Plus, look at that face.

Back to the game, Trent Edwards launched a brutal Interception after a nice looking drive. I blame the INT to rookie guard Andy Levitre who just got uprooted and driven 10 yards back into Trent's face. Not much to interesting happened. Lendalle White has a jawbone, as evident by shedding 30 lbs solely by not drinking Patron apparently. Vince Young looked pretty awful. How can two absolutely stud Quarterbacks (Leinart and Young) just fade off into the sunset after wowing us all during their College years and playing in what could be the greatest national championship game of all time. They are now rotting behind two gray veterans in Warner and Collins, and apparently fighting to even be 2nd string battling out St. Pierre and Patrick Ramsey. Yuck.

I ended up catching some of the Hall of Fame ceremonies since Grandpa Wilson and Bruce Smith were being inducted. Berman had a great speech as he presented for Wilson. Ralph then ended up going on stage and I think he mentioned every game he ever saw since 1950. He had a couple solid points and actually looked alive on stage. I was convinced for several years that he was being controlled by strings like a puppet. Best line when was he wanted to mention that the parade was great and lavish, and he said it was appalling. Everyone was confused....poor Ralph.

All in all it was great to watch some live football and I am pumped for the season and for fantasy. Should be a good one...NV Blues update to follow...
