Weekend Roundup

-Y.E.Yang. How many people thought this would be the man to go toe-to-toe with Tiger and take him out on a Sunday in a major? How many people even knew the South Korean golfer? Even after Yang eagled late, it was hard to take him serious, but he played great golf down the stretch and his approach on 18 was just a perfect cap to the tournament for him. The look on Tiger's face was priceless, he looked beyond shocked and a little hurt, like when the older brother finally gets beat playing one-on-one with his younger brother.

-In the Saturday blurb I told the Pewch Nation to load up on my favorite horse, Better Talk Now in the Sword Dancer at Saratoga. Off at 11:1 he placed to pay 11.00. A 33:1 shot Telling came in for the win, netting the BCA a nice little hit of 322.50. Better Talk Now always comes through for me.

-Usain Bolt is the fastest human to ever walk the face of the Earth. 9.58 100 M. Are you kidding me? And the guy looks almost as if he's slowing down so as not to completely embarrass the rest of his opponents. I was watching a clip of him on Letterman, interesting fact, before he won the 100 at the olympics he was eating chicken nuggets. I'd post the video, but just search it on youtube if you want to watch it's there...otherwise it's a long video for watching a streak for less than 10 seconds. I don't think people really understand how great Bolt is or just how legendary the man will become. When all is said and done I think he'll be the most legendary track and field star of all-time. He toys with people in the 100 meter...that doesn't happen, that can't happen. You usually win these races by hundreths of a second, a slightly slow start, a bobbled step or the slightest let up leads to even the best sprinters getting beaten in this race. Not bolt, he swing his hands, smile at the opponent in the lane next to him or simply put on that look of effortless coasting and still be so far in front of everyone else. He's the GOAT. Respect it.

-Not sure how many people watched the snoozefest that was Sunday Night Baseball last night, after a long rain delay most of the Braves players looked asleep. JA Happ is terrible...somehow he threw another gem. When he comes crashing back down to Earth it may get ugly though. Vazquez actually looked pretty good, mixing a lot of off-speed pitches, unfortunately for him Howard hit a jam shot homer and then after Rollins and Victorino singles he left an inexcusably poor change-up upstairs and Howard did with it what he always will. A really bad weekend for the Braves as Howard killed them, homering off Braves closer Rafael Soriano Friday night for the win and putting the Braves in a wild-card state of mind. Chipper Jones also looked hurt after striking out in the 6th from the right side. Doesn't look good for Atlanta at this point.

-Three major league baseball players were beamed in the head this weekend (in fact I think all three Saturday night, there might have even been another Friday). Perhaps worst of all was Hiroki Kuroda getting beamed with a line drive that surprisingly didn't shatter his skull. That was one of the more alarming shots I've ever seen. Ian Kinsler got beamed by someone on the Bo Sox and was not very happy about it getting up and yelling but was alright. David Wright on the other hand took a 95 MPH fastball from Matt Cain to the head and has been placed on the DL. He may be out for the season and the Mets, at this point, would probably be wise to do just that with the face of the franchise. Cain was visibly upset after the pitch...but it's baseball and that happens, even Roger Clemens misses up and in sometimes. Right Mike Piazza?

-Surprising to no one it appears that the Nationals will not be able to sign San Diego St star pitcher and first pick Stephen Strasburg. Saw this coming a mile away, but I give the Nationals credit for drafting him and offering him a record deal. Not much more you can do...they probably knew this was possible but went through and did the right thing taking him first overall. Something needs to be done about rookie contracts in sports. These should be handled as any other entry-level jobs...there should be a close to set amount for how much a person makes based on position and draft slot. The demands of the agents and players are out of control, and while I can't say I blame them, there has to be some sort of break for the teams until the player proves himself. Just because you're the first pick in the NFL draft doesn't mean you should suddenly be paid in the top-5 at your position. And just because you dominated a couple of Mountain West hitters who probably wouldn't look all too out of place in the SUNYAC doesn't mean you can demand to be paid like CC Sabathia. Take the record deal, prove how fucking sweet you are by mowing down minor leaguers (you're on the Nationals, you might even start in the majors)...win a Cy Young, make the president proud and then cash in.

**Wanted to edit it that Bolt was eating McNuggets...not sure if that was clear (are there really any other kind of nuggets?)...by the way his explanation was pretty hilarious, he said he wasn't too familiar with the asian food and before a race you don't want to eat something you're not familiar with "but chicken nuggets, I know chicken nuggets."

  1. Thanks for the Braves shoutout. We have the pitching to stay in there. Just have to get some guys healthy to get our regular lineup back in the groove.

I agree on the rookie contracts. I hope Strasburg doesnt sign. I hope he goes to the independent league or in Japan and gets injured, and realizes he shouldve taken the biggest offer to date in MLB draft history. He will then go home and become a fat drunk loser. Meanwhile Boras will continue to rake in cash, so what does he care if Strasburg doesnt sign right.

Seems this is the year of guys getting drilled. Every night theres a guy getting glared down or a guy getting dropped. Its a part of baseball. If I played in the big leagues and threw 95, Id be picking dudes off too, I'll admit it. But im not going to someones head. I would think that that guys have more control then letting a ball run up and away at the head, come on. But its easier to take care of in the NL. Just hit the pitcher in the head when he comes up. This never seems to happen. I always wonder why. Why not go after the pitcher who hit your guy? Why doesnt this happen? More than likely the guy will get injured and be out of the game (its a pitcher). Thats a double bonus for your team.

The only guy that needs to get drilled in the head right now in my opinion is Manny. He deserves it.

  2. BTW great shot by Yang on 18 after giving tiger a small chance on 17. Was a good 3 hours of golf watching.

  3. I particularly like Jim Nantz's call on 18. Spoken in the classis soft golf voice. Putting a huge emphasis on how important this is. "To change the landscape of the game of golf. y.e S!!!!!!"

Golf is already an enourmously global game (2nd to probably only soccer). I do not feel that Yang's victory changes any landscapes just because a Korean won a major.

That being said, I was thrilled to see Tiger go down. How many times do we have to watch this guy cry and mutter and stomp around on the golf course like someone just stole his lunch. Cat is pewch.

  4. I agree on strasfucker i hope he doesnt sign and gets hurt but I will say it again I think the Nats played it all wrong. They should have told everyone what the deal was and let the people decide if it was fair and force Boras's hand to have to accept it or look like an even bigger dbag than he already is for refusing a record contract. On to Tiger, it was awesome golf on sunday and as much as I like Tiger it was cool to see the underdog take it for the first time now Tiger is 14 out of 15 with the lead going into the final day, anyone who follows golf know there are only two words that describe that stat(fucking insane).

  5. Nats- tough luck thats the way Boras deals...

Usain- the dude is still playin i see a 9.45 left in those legs

Tiger- played scared all day and as if he had a 5+ shot lead. Lost all his intensity and we forget that Y.E. outdueled him over seas not too long ago. Main story here is RORY MCILROY so impressed by this kid I dont care who won...

    Sox- stink.

  6. PC - I remember the conversation on this at the time of the draft, but refresh my memory, what did the Nats do? Not come out and say how much they were offering? That number is out now at least, I don't quite recall how this whole thing unfolded.

That said, I guess after listening / reading up on it today a lot of people think he will sign (just before midnight maybe) because his hand is a little forced. A couple first-rounders from last year who refused to sign and went the independent route had that backfire in their face..and I think Straburg and even Boras understand that a 20-year old arm that throws 100+ is always going to be an injury risk. I guess he could sign or go back to school and demand a very strict pitch/inning count, but all and all it seems to make the most sense for him to cave. He's done everything he can to see if the Nats would fold, but bravo to them for not..it would've been easy to do so for a franchise which desperately needs a star "face of the franchise" type...but they played it pretty straight and hopefully end up getting the deal done. From there it will be extremely interesting to see how they choose to develop him.

BTW, Mark Reynolds just launched another home run. That's 38. Speaking of fucking insane.

And Chipper manager a sac fly, but his 3 k's tell me that he could be headed for the DL or a couple of days off at least...sad to see.

Dave - interesting point on not hitting more pitchers...I wonder if it's that half the time when a pitcher hits a guy like this they don't get up again (anywhere from the 5th inning on they're likely to get pinch hit for next time)..or simply that that pitcher doesn't want to be getting fastballs whizzed by his ear? Like an unwritten rule between pitchers.

Big ups to the Mulldog for reminding us why he is regarded as the BCA

  8. Thank you sir, btw, I don't know how you know YE Yang outdueled Tiger overseas, if I wasn't so clueless about the whole thing I wouldn't believe you. I haven't heard anyone else mention that fact? You'd think it would be all over the place?

Agreed on McIlroy, almost through in a plug for the Irishman, but decided to just focus on Tiger getting Ying Yanged.

  9. I can confirm Tuzz call on YE Yang outdueling Tiger. I believe they mentioned in on the broadcast on Sunday because there is no other way I would know that. YE Yang is legit.
