Beautiful Tuesday for Sports Fans

While Yankees fans may be bummed about getting shut out by Beckett and the Red Sox, the Mets squeaked out a 6-5 win over the Phils (BCA predictions 2-0). More importantly, hockey fans got their game 7, with a 2-1 Penguins win and suddenly the Magic have a pulse after setting a record in NBA Finals history for field goal percentage and hung on to beat the Lakers by 108-104.

Another victory was the Washington Nationals going ahead and selecting Stephen Straburg, arguably the greatest pitcher in college baseball history (in case you are unaware Strasburg went 13–1 with a 1.32 ERA, 65 hits allowed, 16 earned runs, 19 walks and 195 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched with San Diego St this year), with the first overall pick in the MLB draft despite the fact that they are going to have a hell of a time signing him. I'll let Millman discuss this further...

Hockey highlights made it look like a great game, that's all I have on that..

I'm not sure what to make of the Magic shooting 62.5% and only winning by 4.
Again, with all this talk about Kobe being this great "closer" he played poorly down the stretch last night. Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom could have scored every time they touched the ball, but Kobe refused to give it up. He is a great player, but his selfishness can get in the way of his greatness at times, and it has this series. The Lakers are fortunate to be up 2-1 right now.
Props to Stan Van Gully on working the Skip/Jameer platoon like it should be, 37/11 minutes played respectively...and Skip responded playing an efficient game, 8-12 from the field, scoring 20 points.
Does anyone get better looks from deep than Rashard Lewis (thanks in part to his height / shooting style)?
Luke Walton is scared to shoot the ball.
Mickael Pietrus hit one of the toughest lay-ups I've ever seen and a fade-away jumper I'm not sure MJ would've hit. Who did he sell his soul to before these playoffs? I've always liked his defense, but offensively he is playing like a man possessed (though that put-back to put the Magic up 101-99 with 2 minutes left should have been an offensive goaltend, it's OK though, makes up for all the superstar calls Kobe got - like the bailout reach-in on Pietrus when they had him doubled and that inexcusable foul on Dwight when he easily stuffed Bryant).

  1. All you guys got is a sentence for that hockey game last night. I am not a huge hockey fan but the last 25 minutes of that game was awesome. There is no way the Pens can win in Detroit, but you never know. I could not believe that Detroit did not tie that game. Every time they get the puck it looks like they are on a power play, its awesome hockey.

  2. Can't really comment much on hockey since I don't ever watch it...We throw in a comment here and there and figure you can all discuss in the comment section..feel free to discuss.

  3. I think in order fix this garbage MLB Draft teams should blackball these players that want crazy money. Better idea (but a waste of a pick) is to pick the guy and then never sign him. He goes to some independant league for a year and goes in to the draft next year. Then the next season another team does the same thing. Pick him and dont sign him. Until something drastic is done this wont get fixed. The Nationals dont have the money to sign him, and there is no way in hell he should get Dice K money coming from pathetic San Diego State and whatever garbage conference they play in out west with Airforce and BYU.

  4. Big ups to Stan Van Gundy for realizing my boy, JJ Redick does not belong on the floor with Kobe Byrant, let alone, driving the lane like he's an all-pro. Love the enthusiam JJ, but your a role player. Your role, sit at the end of the bench, collect your $3M a year, and wait til a position with Duke opens up so you can become a graduate assistant. But man could the dude jack up 3s in college...glory years!

  5. In a side note for Tuesday Recs. The Raiders signed Charlie Frye to QB. Should be a tremendous battle out west in August. The Raiders just keep brining it on themselves.

  6. I cut out my part about how the MLB should find a way to make each selection slotting be a certain amount of money, like the NFL...unfortunately the NFL is out of control too, to the point where teams would often rather have a later pick to save money. The MLB draft at this point results in a lot of the rich getting richer...the teams with the highest picks don't necessarily get the best players, it's the teams that spend the most money.

That said Strasburg I believe pitched for Team USA in the WBC? 2 outings, one very good, one not so good? Am I recalling this accurately? WBC is a bit of a joke, but the kid has some nasty stuff...and I can't lie I would love to see what he could do if they brought him straight up to the majors.

Did JJ Redick forget how to shoot or is the NBA line just too deep for him? For a guy who had no problem chucking it from deep in college he seems to have been effected...not that his 3 point % numbers weren't solid, but not as good as you would think...and his game 2 performance was downright embarrassing, clanking wide open looks.

  7. Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the future of the Nationals. 2 players could cost them near 100 million without even playing a major league game.
